  • Study looked at how many inbound and outbound flights are possible in 6 hours
  • Researchers analysed flights on the busiest day of 2019 to produce a ranking
  • At Heathrow, 65,000 international connections were possible across six hours
  • Other well-connected airports include Amsterdam Schiphol and Munich

London Heathrow has been named the world’s most internationally connected airport for the third year running, with Frankfurt International the second-most connected and Chicago O’Hare in third place.

The ranking comes from a study that analysed the number of international connections possible at 50 major airports around the world in a six-hour window on the busiest day for aviation this year.

Heathrow kept the title of world No1 megahub thanks to over 65,000 connections in this time-span.

The ranking, called the Megahubs Index 2019, has been produced by OAG, a digital flight information and intelligence firm. 

Coming fourth in the ranking is Amsterdam Schiphol while Munich International rounds off the top five.

Other well-connected hubs include Toronto Pearson International (sixth), Paris Charles de Gaulle (seventh), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (eighth), Singapore Changi (ninth) and Hong Kong International (10th).

The highest-ranked airport in the Middle East is Dubai International while the most connected in Latin America is named as Mexico City International.

The most connected in the world airport for low-cost carriers is Kuala Lumpur International.

Meanwhile, Chicago O’Hare leads North America in domestic connectivity for the fourth consecutive year.

On the busiest day in aviation this year, 83,580 domestic connections were possible within a three-hour window – two per cent more than last year.

United Airlines operates the majority of flights at O’Hare at 48 per cent, down two per cent from 2018.
